Lakenham Union RFC

7 - 28

(HT 0-0)

Colchester RFC

Union were blown away in the first quarter as their visitors Colchester 2s amas a four try and what turned out to an unassailable lead before Union managed to get into the game.

The game started with am un-characteristic mistake by captain Matt Spenceley from the kick off which resulted in a scrum to the visitors, which they won and spun the ball quickly to round the Union defence to score a converted try from the off.

Colchester scored a further two tries in similar style moving the ball quickly away from the Union pack rounding the scrambling defence to score a second and third converted try.  A fourth followed with barely 14 minutes on the clock as Union tried to run the ball but were turned were turned over on half-way, the visitors again moving the ball quickly, using their quick and powerful backs to make big holes in the Union defence resulting in a 0-28 deficit we less than a quarter of the game gone.

Union, to their credit gathered and dusted themselves off and began to compete in the set-piece which gave them a platform and started to close down their opponents stifling their ability to move the ball.  So, the score remained 0-28 at half time.

Union scored the only points of the second half though a try from Greg Thurston as he found himself at the back of a driving maul from a lineout close to the Colchester 2s line, Lloyd Davis slotted a difficult conversion to take the score to 7-28.

A downpour part way through the second half resulted in awful conditions for both teams, who slugged it out with neither able to make a clean break to score, so the score remained at 7-28 until the final whistle.

Union’s next game see them travel to Woodbridge RFC next Saturday, kick is 2pm.
